Birds Ferry Lodge and Ferry Man’s Cottage

Between Punakaiki & Westport

Rediscover the natural world in this private 20-hectare oasis, ideal for a romantic getaway or a restorative weekend. Indulge in a holistic massage, soak in the outdoor Spa high above a river valley cascading through native forest to the ocean. It’s a luxury Punakaiki accommodation in heartland wilderness, yet easily accessible by air or road, only 2km from State Highway 6 and 20 minutes from Westport and the famous Punakaiki Pancake Rocks… but it feels a lifetime away.

The whiff of fresh baked bread, homemade conserves, real espresso, our own organic fruit and produce: breakfasts at Birds Ferry Lodge are legendary.

Enjoy superb cuisine and wines hosted at the Lodge, or delivered to the self-contained Ferryman’s Cottage as a breathtaking sunset gives way to the absolute quiet of evening. You’ll wake to the bellbird’s song and if you are lucky a Kiwi!

Venture out to explore a wild landscape steeped in Maori and European history, or curl up by the fire with a book and a glass of wine, to the sigh of the ocean. No live television, no landline, no clocks, but with many small luxuries and a commitment to the environment, it’s the perfect retreat for indulgent relaxation.

Ghost Lodge

Ghost Lodge is your ultimate Northern West Coast base regardless of time of year.

Ghost Lodge was originally built in the 1880’s as a butchers. Immense thought and care has been taken during its rebuild to retain its original charm with recycled native New Zealand timbers being used throughout. Lovingly renovated and restored, it’s fully insulated and carpeted throughout with a log burner to keep you cozy and warm during winter, and french doors that open out to stunning outdoor areas, allowing for plenty of fresh air flow to keep you cool and comfortable during summer.

The lodge is perfect for large groups, cyclists, motorcyclists on tour, families as well as individual travelers.

Ghost Lodge offers off street parking for cars, boats and bikes. It has beach access and free use of wetsuits, boogie boards and surf boards, so you can enjoy the beach – literally at the bottom of the garden. And if you’ve just ridden the Old Ghost Road (or the Heaphy Track) there are hoses for washing down your bike and plenty of space to park them. Take a break for a day or two (recover from those saddle sores) and relax at Ghost Lodge before your next adventure.

Visit the Ghost Lodge website to view the various rooming options on the availability calendar for your preferred date of travel.
